Blogging For Beginners: Should I Start A Personal Blog?

A common question people ask themselves when figuring out a side hustle is this:

Should I start a personal blog?

For me, I started a blog as a way to create a business. From the very beginning, blogging was my ticket to living life on my terms.

Further, I want to be able to leave a legacy for my family and I know having my own business (or businesses) is the right way to do that.

To do it effectively, I need to be have the right mindset and attitude. The same goes with any endeavor you want to start in life.

With this in mind, I want to explore things with you here in a few upcoming posts for this Blogging For Beginners series.

Lesson #1: Finding your why

Let’s consider something for a moment in our first lesson of Blogging for Beginners here.

What is your goal with your blog?

Why do you want to start a blog?

The first thing I want you to understand about going into blogging is that it’s not for the faint of heart. It’s a tough job to craft a website, find your voice, write constantly when nobody is reading, monetize it effectively, and keep going when you want to stop.

Haha. No, I’m not trying to discourage you, but it’s best to go into this knowing what you’re in for.

So, I’ll ask the questions again …

What’s your goal with your blog?

Blogging is a time commitment

Allow me to illustrate the importance of this. My wife is a stay-at-home mother and takes our two children on play dates with other moms and kids.

During a recent play date, my wife and two other moms discussed the topic of blogging. My wife shared parts of our story. Specifically, what the blog is, who we target, and how we make money.

One mom said she writes a blog, knows her traffic numbers, but hopes to turn it into something one day. The other mom said she wanted to start a blog two weeks ago, but gave up after learning how much work it takes.

Do you see the problem here?

One blogger is actively blogging, but has no goal in mind. The other … we’ll say potential … blogger has neither a goal or a purpose to starting a blog. If she did, she wouldn’t give up after learning about the “work.”

Failure is part of the learning process

Yes, blogging is a lot of work. Many blogs, like other businesses, do fail. It happens.

That is the reason the goal of your blog and the “why” behind that goal is so crucial. It’s the reason you start, the reason you keep going, and the reason you push through failure. All failure is to you now is a chance to learn and drive on.

The goal and why are your foundation. You may change your approach, how you market and reach your target audience, and your path to monetization.

However, the driving force behind the blog you create must align with your goal and your why.

One more time …
